Hearts. And Caring.

The more people I meet, the more I learn about relationships, and what people need.

More specifically, I've been learning what the heart needs in order for someone

to feel happiness.

In my interactions with different groups of people, I've realized that it doesn't

matter what someone's background is; we all want the same thing.

To feel like somebody cares about us.

In the past week, I've had 2 very powerful experiences that have

opened my eyes to this truth.

A couple weeks ago, a sweet woman involved in TSP bought

groceries for a family that I work with who is in great need.

She had me deliver the groceries,

and I sat and talked to the mother for almost 2 hours.

I'm always calling her, asking her what their family needs, taking them

different things that I feel like will help them in their dire situation.

I genuinely love them, and care about what happens to those sweet kids.

After listening to her life story, and just letting her talk to me, I could tell that

her mood had completely changed just from me being there.

As I was leaving she said, "Hey Ashley. Thanks for always thinking about us. Really, thank you."

The groceries, clothes, couches, dishes, etc, that we take their family

are truly appreciated. It brings me joy to give them things they need.

But those are just things.

You can give things, and with no love or emotion behind it, they mean nothing.

Of all the things she could have thanked me for, she thanked me for

caring and thinking about her.

Last week, we also awarded 8 students scholarship money that all of us

have been working like crazy to raise.

(Don't worry, I'll be posting about it soon!)

It was a complete surprise to the kids, and we awarded them during their various

after school activities... You know, like Publisher's Clearing House style.

We had each kid look at the camera and say how the scholarship would help them,

and what it meant to them.

Each kid was so grateful and touched that they were chosen.

One girl specifically said,

"I've been worried my whole life how I was going to pay for college.

This is going to open up so many doors for me.

But that's not all. Ashley, I can't thank you enough for all the time you put in

to doing this for us. Who would ever do this for us? No one.

But you did. You thought about us. Thank you."

(Then we both cried, and hugged...you know, typical girl stuff.)

A lot of people write and tell me

I want to do something BIG, but I don't know where to start...

I wish I could do more, but financially we're tight and I just can't.

Friends, I've learned a very simple and valuable lesson.

It's not about doing BIG things, or things that are expensive.

That's not how you change people's lives.

You make a difference by allowing the person you are serving to feel that you care.

That can be done by merely having a conversation.

Reach into the hearts around you.

Fulfill their needs by letting them know that they haven't been forgotten in their struggles.

And that is how we are going to change the world.

I don't talk about it a lot on the blog, but I went on a 1.5 year mission for the Mormon church.

It's something that completely changed my life, and I treasure it deeply.

I try to keep it special, and personal, and not thrown out for people to criticize.

But I want to share a story about an experience that I had, that taught me a lot about life.

This story isn't a matter of religion, but of learning, and growing, and trying.

No matter your religious beliefs, or perhaps your struggle finding any to believe at all,

this story can be applied to you in a variety of different ways.

As missionaries we worked relentlessly serving others.

Our goal was to bring them love, and help them reach their full potential while in this life.

Some days were absolutely defeating, all of them were tiring, and my heart grew

1,000 sizes bigger I think.

I'll never forget an experience I had with a sweet woman who I still keep in contact with.

She lives in the projects, and is the kindest soul I've ever met in my life.

She was searching for more in life, and wanted a deeper relationship with God.

After teaching her for several months, we realized that she still never felt comfortable

praying around us, and we didn't know why.

She loved hearing us pray, asking God to bless her, and to fill her life.

But she was afraid to pray out loud in front of us.

Finally, this sweet woman opened up to us,

"I'm afraid to pray in front of you because I could never pray as well as you can.

I don't want it to be bad, and I don't want to disappoint you."

I smiled, and answered,

"There's no such thing as a 'bad' prayer. It's you, talking to God, and He

doesn't compare it to other people's, and we sure don't either."

She bowed her head, and started to pray.

To this day, I have never heard a more beautiful, heartfelt, and simple prayer.

I loved how hard she was trying, and I felt so blessed to be in the life of this humble woman

who wanted nothing more than to please God.

No, she wasn't perfect, but she didn't have to be. She was trying.

I remember thinking that as she was praying, and distinctly learning something

that took me over 20 years to learn.

As we go through our daily lives, a lot of times we think

This isn't good enough.

I'm not good enough.

I don't want to try to do that, because I will fail.

All the while, God is looking down, seeing us trying, and is so, so proud.

We beat ourselves up over little things.

Things that don't even really matter.

If we could change our thinking to I'm trying, and I'm getting better.

Rather than, I'm not good enough, and I'm never going to be...

Why can't I be more like here? She seems perfect.

We'd accomplish so much more in our lives, and feel so much more happiness.

I think that our days should be full of celebrating our strengths, and working on

aspects of our lives to improve on.

Celebrate little moments that bring you joy, instead of dwelling on what is draining you.

Celebrate the highs of the day, while learning from the lows.

Celebrate your talents, and appreciate that they are going to be different than your neighbor's.

Celebrate the fact that you were able to spend time with your family,

even though the sink is full of dishes, and you didn't even put makeup on the whole day.

Celebrate life.

Celebrate happiness.

And most of all, celebrate you.

Because nobody can be you, better than you.

I don't really know how to introduce this post today,

other than to say I can't express how grateful I am for her.

Nicole is an answer to many, many prayers, and I know that she was lead

to have a role in The Shine Project.

Here's the story about how she listened to her feelings and

became not only my assistant, but a really sweet friend.

Hi, I'm Nicole. Last year my husband came to me and told me that he wanted to go back to grad school- he felt like he was supposed to be doing something different. I was 9 months pregnant and honestly, this made me a little nervous. So we prayed about it and asked the Lord for an answer. Two months after our son was born we decided that it was time to put our house on the market. We got an offer in 2 1/2 days!! We knew the path we were to go on. I quit my stressful job in marketing and my husband started school. With a little time on my hands, I decided to get back into blogging since I missed it so much. This is when I found the world of mommy blogs. Through one blog that I read daily I stumbled across Ashley's blog. Regrettably I can say that I didn't hang out to check out all the amazing things she was up to. But by the Grace of God, one day I came back.. and read. I've never understood when people say that the Lord has spoken to them, but I'm here to tell you that He really does. I want to share with you something that I wrote about Ashley's blog a while back.

I have always felt like the Lord has had big plans for me. That I could be involved in something extremely positive. I always prayed to Him & asked "is this what I am suppose to be doing, Lord?" Stewardship has been on my mind a lot lately. I have felt that whatever it is that I am suppose to be doing as a steward of the Lord is right in front of me, but I wasn't sure what it was. And honestly, when I was presented with past opportunities I have never felt my 'YES' answer.

So when I stumbled back onto Ashley's blog and actually read it, I felt something special but chose to ignore it. I kept thinking about her and The Shine Project. When I went back again to her blog it then hit me, the Lord is speaking to me. I needed to listen. I did just that. I emailed Ashley and asked he how I could help. We talked back and forth via email and got to know each other. I was able to help her with a couple things she needed, I just didn't feel like that was enough. But how am I supposed to help someone in Arizona when I live in Missouri? Then one night I thought that maybe Ashley needed an assistant, I didn't want pay, I didn't want recognition I just wanted to help out. One thing I have learned about Ashley is that The Shine Project is 24/7 for her, she is always on the go and doing so much for what she has passion for. So I sent her an email. I was certain she would read it and think I was crazy, but she didn't. Turns out she was praying to the Lord for some help in that department. The Lord called on me, and I listened. I am so happy that I sent her that email. I have my dream job, working for such an amazing women who has so much love for what she does, The Shine Project. I finally feel like I am doing what the Lord had planned for me. If my husband wouldn't have had the desire to go back to school, and our house wouldn't have sold I would still be working at a job that I was unhappy with, and would not have probably had time to start blogging again therefore I may have never had met Ashley. When you listen to God, good things do happen.

Sometimes we all feel like we could be doing more to make a positive impact, but we end up falling short of following through. It could be a missed opportunity to make a difference, to do something bigger. I encourage everyone to follow through with what they feel is right, what they have a passion for and not to ignore the Lord speaking to them, after all He knows what is best. So go out there, trust in the Lord and make a difference in this world, because it starts with you. You have that power to help out, you have that power to SHINE.

Shyness, or Whatever.

Yesterday, this sweet girl left a comment on a post.

It said,

it's hard to reach out to people sometimes,

just because I feel like such a quiet, shy person.

you seem so bubbly and outgoing...I wish I was naturally more like that. i do.
gonna try and go out of my way to show love to others this week.

even if it puts me way out of my comfort zone.

You might not believe me, but I used to be the shyest person you ever met.
When I was really little, I would literally want to cry if people talked to me.
So, I would just stand there, and say nothing at all.
I remember in Kindergarten, all the girls in class wanted to be my friend,
but I just couldn't talk to them.
One time my mom came and volunteered and girls were yelling my name,
trying to get my attention... I just stood there, and looked down.
She had a long talk with me after about how I need to be friendly, and be nice to people.
But she didn't get it. I wasn't unfriendly, I was shy.
And I'd rather read books and write down my feelings, and stories of my dreams,
than talk about them.
I was probably the only 8 year old girl who couldn't wait to get home to write.

I was always really insecure with myself.
For some reason, oh forbid, I was scared that if I did or said something weird,
that I would get made fun of. I also didn't want people to not understand the things that
were the most important to me. To solve that problem, being quiet was just the best thing.
This went on for years, even in high school.
I had a lot of friends, but was especially shy around people that I didn't know.
In fact, to be honest, I still struggle in large groups of people sometimes.
Some people took this as me being stuck up, which was completely opposite of how I really felt.

When I got to college, I realized something.
I realized that I would never live the life that I wanted, or affect people that I wanted to help,
if I kept to myself.
I knew that being shy was trapping my talents inside me,
I wanted to change.

Naturally, I'm not an outgoing person.
It's a choice that I have to make everyday.
Because I've made the choice so many times, now it has become a part of who I am.

Just yesterday I was outside reading, and an old woman strolled by on her walker.
I stopped myself from yelling, Hi! How is your day going!?
Because I didn't know her, and I didn't want her to think I was crazy.
On her way back from the mailbox I thought, wait, what?
Get over it Ashley!
So I yelled to her, and she was so, so happy that someone took the time to talk.
Sometimes, I still have to consciously think about making an effort to be outgoing.

Going out of your comfort zone is hard, it really is.
Oh, but it feels so great to conquer that thing that you feel holds you back.
Perhaps it's not shyness, but a million other things that you struggle with.
Not everything comes naturally, and if you're like me, a lot of things don't!
But when you practice them, ask for help, and make the choice to change, it will happen.

I view challenges as blessings.
If I was born naturally outgoing, I wouldn't take as much time
seeking out those who I know feel uncomfortable, or are scared to voice their opinions.
I understand how they feel, and have been able to connect with a lot of people
who struggle with making themselves heard.
If I was born naturally outgoing, I probably wouldn't have clung to writing growing up.
My passion for it grew during that time, because it was my escape.
But there's a time and a season for everything,
and sometimes you have to pack your bags and bid farewell to the thing
you have become comfortable with that you know holds you back.

And then suddenly, you'll go from being so shy that you pee your pants when a stranger
merely glances at you,
to being excited to speak at a conference full of 1,000+ people in Dallas next week.
There's no one stopping you, but you.

I've Found Every Person in the World on Pinterest

Last week I posted THIS pin onto Pinterest.

In order to fully chew what I'm spitting out, you need to look at it.

I had randomly found it, thought it looked amazing, and wanted to try it out in the future.

Little did I know that soon after, 21,000 other people would be re-pinning

that same pin from off of my board.

Who knew that single pin would cause such an uproar on Pinterest?

As the comments came in, some completely ridiculous and others normal,

I realized that I had all the evidence in one place to prove what kind of people are in this world.

The more people you meet, and the more your business grows, you'll encounter

people who belong to one of the 7 categories that I am about to list below.

The thing is, it doesn't matter if it's a tiny thing like a pin on your Pinterest board,

or an idea that you've taken years to develop...

Someone always is going to have something to say.

What can be different, however, is the way you react to it.

The 7 groups of people that I will be listing below have been taken from

the comments left under THIS pin.

1. The Happy to Criticize:

"First the contents of a glow stick are extremely poisonous , second the contents are also liquid so it wont float around , third this pic is clearly photo shop due to the fact of the border of the pic inside and also the fake sparkle effects and the finally of there's no lid on the jar , please don't humor the poster by actually trying this."

2.The Peacemaker:

"Hey friends don't put negative feedback on someone's post.

Just go on to the next board. Be kind to each other."

3. The No Matter What, Unless it Was My Idea, It Sucks:

Why would you want your kids to think that trapping fairies in a jar was a good idea anyway?

4. The I'm Miserable, So I Want To Make Everyone Else Miserable Too!

Why would you post something that will not work and is not safe.

Takes the fun out of the whole Pinterest experience. Stop it!

This world is full of creative, fun, quirky, and crazy minds.

We interact with each other on a daily basis,

work together, and cross paths.

You have the choice to be the person who is positive,

who people like to be around.

Or, you have the choice to make the lives around you miserable.

They take the same amount of effort.

Remember the first time that you told me you loved me?

You had been really quiet at the end of the night,

and really smiley.

I never told you, but I knew that it was coming.

You walked me out to the parking lot, and I stood on the curb while you leaned

against my car. You were still taller than I was.

You started telling some long story,

about something that I didn't really understand.

(Now I know that you tell all stories to me like that :) )

You said you'd never felt like this before.

And I smiled.

I love you.

It was the first time in my life that nothing, yet everything, made sense all at the same time.

I didn't even have to think about it,

I already knew I loved you.

It was just... natural.

Like my heart had been waiting for you my whole life,

and it just knew when it found you.

And man, I'm so grateful that I did.

I remember when we first started talking about getting married.

We were driving in your car,

you had just sang to me for the first time. You little heart breaker.

Oh my gosh we're still in school.

My dad is going to literally die.

I had every reason to freak out and think that we were crazy.

We might have been,

there's been fearlessness.

Through the chaos,

there's been peace.

Through the tears,

there's been comfort.

Because you've taught me that being together is the only thing that matters.

Sweet Epiphany

Epiphany Chocolates gave me 10 boxes of the best chocolates I've

literally ever had in my life, to pass out to 10 random people.

I love Valentine's Day, so clearly I was ecstatic.

Chocolate+random acts of kindness= the best day ever.

The first lady I stopped was completely shocked.

"You just want to give these to me?"

I smiled... "Well yes!"

She laughed, looked completely surprised and said,

"Why? Who are you with?"

I told her, "I'm with no one. Just trying to spread a little love,

and I hope that you really do have a great Valentines Day."

"Wow. Thank you so, so much."

It really is simple.

Changing someone's day doesn't take a huge flash mob

with sparkling lights while Beyonce serenades them to tears.

And in fact, it doesn't even take a box of chocolates.

Although, if you ever plan on doing a random act of kindness for me,

I really wouldn't turn chocolates down.

All it takes is a sincere gesture towards someone that makes them feel like

wow, people do care about me. Today isn't so bad, after all.

I challenge you this Valentine's Day to do something with a little extra love

for someone who is completely not expecting it.

Hey, kids?

Some days are a little more special than others.

You know, when you get to be wrapped in little activities that send

electric waves through your veins that rejuvenate you...

They make you remember, "Oh ya! This is why I love my life. This is why I work so hard."

My special days are always the days that I get to spend with the students.

(And the others involve Mike, of course. Don't be sad babe...you're my #1)

There's officially a Shine Club at the high school. They'll be popping up all over the place soon,

but the high school is where all of this shiny stuff happened in the first place.

So it will always be the most special to me.

I feel full of love every time I turn a corner there because chances are that

I'll run into a student that I know, and love, and happiness spreads through

my veins as I remember why I live the life that I do.

This week we made Valentine's for a senior care center in Phoenix.

I also gave them an optional assignment:

To write a Valentine to an 11 year old girl in Idaho who is dealing with some really bad cancer.

And you know what? Every. Single. Kid. made her a Valentine.

"Miss Ashley? Do you think she'd like glitter on her card?

I want to make this one realllly nice so that she feels special when she opens it."

"Miss Ashley? Do you want to read this poem that I just wrote for her?

Do you think that it will make her smile?"

You know what I want to say to them? What I really want to say?

Hey kids? Do you know how amazing you are?

Do you really, really, really know how much I look up to you and admire you?

Do you realize that you are more caring, compassionate, and loving than 90% of people

living in this world?

I know that you're going home to crowded houses tonight,

and that some of you wont be able to eat again until the school feeds you tomorrow,

and that several of you miss your dad because he's in jail,

or you wish that you even knew your mom...

But you know what?

You're going to be okay.

You're going to be okay if you stick true to who you really are on the inside.

Do you know why?

Because you're amazing.

And you teach me more about life than I could learn anywhere else.

And even though you feel like every odd is stacked against you,

you're going to make something great of yourself.

I'm really trying to make people in this world aware of you...

Because you're aware of them.

And you have so, so much love to give.

Be Somebody's Hero

I just woke up from a nap, and it's 8 PM.

I have a little problem at night called I can't fall asleep.

My mind races with ideas, ways to help a person I talked to that day, and the list goes on.

I think we should have switches on our brains so they can be flipped off.

Since mine malfunctions every night from about 10 PM-3 AM, I get really tired

throughout the day.

Today as I was talking to various people, running around town to different

homes and service projects, it occurred to me:

A lot of my tiredness comes from being so emotionally involved

in other people's lives.

For example, today I sat and talked to a students mom for over an hour.

I genuinely care about her and her family.

Their story hurts me.

Every time I leave their house I literally feel like someone just punched

me in the stomach, turned me upside down, and shook me.

Right after that, I rushed to get to the school on time. I made Valentine's with the SHINE Club

at the high school for a care center. Those kids fill me with joy. And also sadness

because I know how many of them struggle.

I then made a connection:

It's so much easier to turn the other way when you see bad things happening.

Why?

Because you're able to stay disconnected if you don't fully know what's going on.

I think people figure that if they don't go see why there's yelling going on at their neighbors,

or feel what it's like to serve food to homeless people,

or go and visit dying children in the hospital,

then they don't have to fully acknowledge that it's happening.

Sometimes I feel like I know far more about people's situations than I want to.

But then I see that it has made me look at life differently.

More compassionately.

Life receives a fullness that you can't otherwise obtain when you connect

on a personal level with people.

When you sincerely ask the clerk at the gas station how his day is,

and then not only listen, but offer compassion.

Connections can be made with every person you come in contact with;

You just have to allow them to.

My wish is that we all can reach out and tackle hard things, instead of hoping that they'll

eventually be solved in their own.

Be somebody's hero. Today, and everyday.

Who I Dream For

Last week one of my sweet friends sent me a picture she took

of a saying that she just knew I'd love.

" I Dream big for those who can't."

I seriously don't think I've ever heard anything more beautiful.

I wanted to share with you more about the people I dream for.

I've been giving one last big push for money for 2011 applicants.

The raffle ends on Wednesday, and I want to be able to award as many

students as possible.

These students are people.

With dreams.

Who haven't been given a fair chance.

Tonight I thought that I'd share with you some of the things they wrote in their

"I was born and raised in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia...When we came to Arizona, it was tough

trying to adapt to the culture, technology, and weather, but I got used to it in a matter of time.

Okay, Be The Change Day was awesome.

Really really really awesome.

I loved seeing posts on the facebook wall about what you did,

and how you felt.

Here were some of them:

"Going to deliver a "get well" package for my sweet neighbor who just had open heart surgery. I didn't know she just got out of the hospital, but happened (divine intervention) to run into her hubby at the store last evening who told me. I've only talked w/her a few times in the last year(sad as we all get busy), but we clicked instantly and hope she gets better asap!"

"So I started my day off w/coffee & decided to bless the person in line after me... When I told the barista, she looked @ me w/awe & almost disbelief. All I said was for her to tell the lady to have a wonderful day & God bless. My 4yr old daughter said, Mom that was awesome, we should bless others & since I we don't have lots of money I'll write a list of how we can make people smile. Wow, I'm a proud mo. Looks like we'll be pulling weeds, washing a car, making cookies & giving daddy lots of hugs & kisses today! Like I told my daughter, we should do this daily, so the world will be a better place. Have a wonderful day, God bless!"

A girl in middle school emailed me last week and asked me for ideas for Be The Change Day.

She was SOOO excited. Here's what she ended up doing...

"One of the things that I did was I made rice crispy treats and worte a note to give to the maintance worker at our school. Another thing was, that I out a note into the mailbox for the mailman explaining how I appreciate him!"

So much good happened that day.

And guess what, it can happen every single day if we just pay attention.

You all are seriously the reason why I believe that goodness exists in this world.

We're changing it, you know that?

Tender Mercies

There's something that happens to us all on a daily basis,

whether we are open to recognize it or not.

I like to call them tender mercies.

You know, the moments where a little drop of heaven

ends up in front of you out of nowhere, and it's exactly what you need.

Today, this was mine:

A frustrating morning.

In a random parking lot tucked away downtown,

trying to get my thoughts together,

I looked up and this is what I saw.

speechless.

Happiness comes from being able to recognize the little things.

It comes from holding on to hope,

and finding joy around every corner...

even when your corners seem like they are taking you around in circles.

Enjoy the ride.

Don't just endure it.

For the past couple of months, we've been raising $ to send a handful of students to college.

This is the last fundraiser for 2011 students.

As I've been going through scholarship applications,

I knew we had to raise money to award one more student.

These students are sleeping on tile floors without beds,

have no funds for college,and are completely amazing.

Be The Change Day.

Every once in a while, people will get the urge to do something really nice for someone,

something out of the ordinary. And it makes them feel good.

Even less often than that, you meet people who live their whole life giving.

Because they've learned that when you give, you gain more than you could ever have otherwise.

No matter if today is the first time you've ever done a random act of kindness for a stranger,

or this way of giving is a part of who you are, it doesnt matter.

Because today, we are making an extra effort to go the extra mile for someone who might

otherwise feel forgotten.

As you go through today looking for ways to serve, capture the moments in your memory

as a way to motivate yourself to do even more good in the future.

My goal is not to have one feel good day, but to inspire you to continuously be the change.

Be the change by doing what most others would overlook.

Be the change by remembering those who would usually be forgotten.

Be the change by stepping out of your comfort zone,

to bring happiness to a soul who will remember you for eternity.

Because, after all, this is what life is all about.

Headband- Just Lovely Things

My mom went and dropped off dishes at one of my student's houses this weekend.

They're probably the only family that speaks English in their run-down apartment complex,

and there are 5 kids and 1 mom crammed in a small, two bedroom living space.

I know that they don't have couches (last time I was there, they had beds)

we try to buy this sweet friend clothes when we can,

and the mom is always always sick; due to circumstances she can't control.

Yesterday my mom was telling me how she found a couch for them,

and that I need to go and pick it up today.

Then she said,

"Did you know that they don't have beds anymore, because they had to leave them at

the old apartment? All of the kids sleep on the tile floor, I don't think they even have pillows.

When I asked the mom what else she needed, she said that she loved the tangelos that I took

them from our tree, and would love more.

But that's not the part that made me cry three times yesterday.

The part that made me cry was when I walked up to their door, and saw a long extension

cord running from their house to their neighbors.

I knocked on the door and the little girl answered. She smiled and yelled, "Ashley's mom is here!"

She was wearing the shirt you gave her for Christmas, and it was filthy.

The bike you got her was leaning against the wall, with a popped tire.

I asked her what the extension cord was for, and she said,

'Our neighbors electricity got shut off, so we're letting them borrow ours.' "

This family who literally has nothing, was allowing their neighbors to use their electricity.

If that isn't an image of love and the way things are supposed to be, I don't know what is.

So many people that just need to borrow a little electricity from you.

They need you to help light their lives.

Even if you feel like you have nothing to give,

reach deep within yourself, and find it.

Bruschetta and Pesto

So, maybe you've heard Ashley bragging about how much she loves when her husband cooks,

or how he likes to make great food for her all the time?

Well, that's me.

And the rumors are true.

I love cooking for Ashley.

I started Mr. Shine's Food Blog last month

and I've really enjoyed creating new meals for us to eat.

I also really enjoy food photography!

But trust me, it is very challenging to take great food pictures.

Today, I am going to share with you how to make two things:

1. Bruschetta

2. Pasta with Pesto sauce

Both are absolutely delicious and while she was eating it,

And, mid-bite,

Ashley told me that she wants to have this again sometime!

Let's start with what you'll need for the bruschetta:

1 baguette

2 tablespoons olive oil

3 tablespoons of chopped up garlic

2 tomatoes

1/4 cup balsamic vinegar

1/4 cup olive oil

mozarella cheese

about an ounce of basil leaves

1/2 cup shredded parmesan cheese

Heat up 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a frying pan and add the chopped up garlic.

Sautee for approximtely 2 minutes, then put it into a mixing bowl.

Put the basil and a small amount of olive oil in a blender and mix it up.

Add the chopped up tomatoes, 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar, 1/4 cup olive oil, chopped up basil and parmesan cheese to the garlic in the mixing bowl and gently stir together.

Toast the baguette, then pile the mixture you just created on top of the bread.

Here's what you need for the pasta:

1/2 package of spaghetti

2-3 ounces of basil leaves

3 tablespoons chopped garlic

1/3 cup olive oil

diced tomatoes

Mix the basil leaves, garlic and olive oil in a blender.

Pour them on top of your cooked spaghetti noodles,

then sprinkle some tomatoes on top.

Folks, let's face it.

This meal is FRESH, vegetarian, colorful, and it's making my mouth water looking at these pictures!

YUM!

And, just a little hint.....

The bruschetta makes for an excellent appetizer for any upcoming Super Bowl party

you may be going to within the next week or so... Just saying.

Enjoying the Little Things

Today as I was driving home there was a girl on the side of the road,

her sign read, "Homeless Student. Please help."

She looked exhausted.

Her clothes were dirty.

And I keep thinking, That's somebody's daughter.

She's somebody's sister, niece, old neighbor, best friend.

Where are the people that love her?

Why aren't they helping?

We can't control the world.

Or the people in it.

But we can control ourselves, our actions, our thoughts.

I've tried really hard to be more gentle this week,

and less on the go.

(I guess it helped that we had the flu for 3 days and I couldn't do anything.)

But I tried really hard to soak in all the little things.

You know what the best part of my week was?

When Mike and I were laying in bed, sick to our stomachs,

he leaned over to me and smiled,

"You are my most favorite person in this galaxy."

It's the little things that matter.

Hi Shine Project readers! I'm Jenna and I blog over here at the Duty Family blog. I am so grateful to be posting and doing a giveaway here today. Ashley is such a role model to me and so many others. The things she does to help others is truly inspiring.

So I want to talk a little about that today. You know, helping others. It's something that I wish I was better at. I know I would feel so good if I tried to help somebody out every single day. It could be as simple as holding the door for someone who is walking behind you. Or baking cookies for someone. Or if you know someone has a super busy week, asking them if you could make them dinner one night and bring it to them.

I don't think we all realize how much it can affect someone when we help them. It might be exactly what they needed. And even if someone doesn't need the help it doesn't mean you shouldn't help them. Even a friendly smile or a compliment can really make someone's day. I definitely know that it does for me.

I want to challenge all of you awesome readers to make it a goal to help someone every day for a week. Really it doesn't have to be anything big. You can get totally creative with it.

Blazer and Shirt- Vintage

(For sale, $25 and $15...email me if you want them)

If you looked into my home, you'd see a cozy place full of love. And a hairless dog.

You'd see re-done furniture from Craigslist, a chevron rug that I can never keep clean,

and a huge wall full of pictures of Mike and I.

A broken dishwasher might catch your eye, and a pile of dirty clothes

in the bedroom would let you know that we've had the flu for 3 days.

If you looked into my office, you'd see where I spend the majority of my time.

You'd see two really large maps; one of them you can scratch off the places that you've been.

You'd see a stack of student scholarship applications on my desk,

and if you read them all,

you'd know why my heart aches for these kids,

and why I hate that I have to choose only a few of them to give money to.

You'd see a large box full of shine shirts, and beads scattered in every crack of the room,

and a desk full of student pictures and shine signs

You'd see two porcelain statues of Christ, on either side of my computer.

If you looked into my gmail, you'd see hundreds of emails from the sweetest people

that you didn't even know could exist.

Your faith in humanity and their motives would be redeemed,

and you'd wish that you could meet every single one of them in person.

You'd jump up and down as you saw new projects that are coming in February,

and if I was lucky, you'd want to help.

If you looked into my phone, you'd find messages and calls from the people I love most.

You'd see embarrassing pictures that my sister takes of me,

and that we love to face chat before bed.

You'd gush about the flirtatious texts Mike sends,

and wonder if I think it's normal that I talk to my mom at least 5 times a day.

You'd find that a lot of my friends live outside of Arizona,

and that I love to have little girls nights with the ones who don't.

If you looked into my head, you'd think I was crazy.

You'd be sure that no normal person could have as many ideas at one time like I do.

You'd see a lot of logical choices being tossed around,

and wonder why I don't listen to anything logical at all.

But it all would make sense, because then

You'd look into my heart.

And you'd see that any fear I have, is outweighed by what I feel is right.

You'd see compassion, and you'd know that what I put my time into

really really really becomes who I am.

You'd wonder if it was healthy to be so wrapped up in other people's emotions,

and I'd say I don't know.

But that I couldn't imagine living any other way.

And you'd see that I mean it every time that I say,

I am happy.

Valentine Lollipop Cookies

INGREDIENTS for cookies

2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup unsalted butter, softened
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Powdered sugar, for rolling out dough
3 tablespoons milk
1/2 cup white chocolate chips or disks
lollipop sticks
sprinkles
INGREDIENTS FOR ROYAL ICING:
3 egg whites
3 cups of confectioners sugar
1 teaspoon lemon extract
1 tablespoon pink gel food coloring
(you can purchase this at hobby lobby or your local craft store)
DIRECTIONS FOR ICING:
1. place egg whites in a bowl and whip on high until fluffy, slowly add the confectioner's sugar and keep beating. Now add the lemon extract and the food coloring and beat until slightly stiff. Set aside.

DIRECTIONS for cookie dough:

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.

Sift together the flour, salt and baking powder and set aside.

Cream butter and sugar together in another large bowl. Add egg, vanilla, milk and beat until incorporated. Gradually add the dry mixture, beating until combined. Knead dough for a few minuets to combine thoroughly. Wrap with saran wrap and place

in the refrigerator to chill for about 30 minuets.

To Make Cookies:

1. break the dough ball in half and roll out on a clean surface covered with powdered sugar to prevent sticking.

2. ll dough out until about 1/8 of an inch thick.

3. use heart cookie cutter to cut cookies.

4. Now use small heart cookie cutter to create the heart hole.

5. use a spatula to lift cookie off of counter and onto a sill pat or cookie sheet lined with wax paper.

6. bake cookies for 10-15 minuets at 375 degrees. Cookies should just start to get golden brown around the edges.

7. Repeat with the other half of your dough. You may do it all at once if you have room in your oven and enough cookie sheets to fit the entire batch. I had to do it in 2 rounds.

9. While the cookies are baking take 1/2 cup of white chocolate and melt it in the microwave. Set it aside with lollipop sticks ready.

10. MOST IMPORTANT STEP FOR SUCCESSFUL LOLLIPOP.
As soon as the cookies come out of the oven very carefully transfer them to a wire wrack with spatula while piping hot. Now dip a lollipop stick in the white chocolate and press into the lower portion of the heart. You MUST do this when the cookie is still hot and soft. Do it as soon as they come out of the oven. Once you have them finished place them in the freezer right away for the chocolate to set around your stick.

11. Make your royal icing while the cookies are setting in the freezer.

12. Now ice your cookies, top with sprinkles and add a bow. You may place them in the refrigerator to set. The royal icing will harden after a couple hours and be easy to transport with no mess.

Lipstick Kisses.

Mike and I are religious about giving each other kisses before the other one leaves for the day.

Sometimes he leaves so early that I barely have one eye open.

Other times, my lipstick is on and I'm the one out the door.

When my lipstick is on, our kisses change a little bit.

Mike hates these kind.

I either make him just kiss my cheek to not smear my face,

or I pull my lips in like a grandma so most of my gloss will be protected.

I'm in too much of a hurry to fix my lipstick,

so kisses are quick.

A couple of weeks ago I was rushing to leave,

and because of Mike's work schedule we weren't going to see each other for

a longer period of time than normal.

I went in to kiss him, hiding my lips to protect my gloss,

but this time he just looked at me.

"Ashley. Just kiss me."

I found myself annoyed.

"I don't care if it gets on my face. Just put more on in the car.

I'm not going to see you for a while."

And then I learned...

I learned that if you're in too much of a rush to enjoy the small moments that matter,

at the end of the day you're left with a bunch of meaningless events.

I've been trying to slow down lately.

Trying to spend less time rushing what's the most important;

Love.

That's what's most important.

And letting the people that are close to you feel that you care.

That if it was the last time you ever saw them,

they'd be able to say,

"She loved me. I know it."

Now, lipstick kisses are the best.

Because they mean that I'm more concerned about my husband,

than the million things I have to get done that day.

Eventually, they'll all get done.

And then new things will come up.

And the people I need the most will be there through all of it.

I want them to know that I'm there for them, too.

This week, slow down.

Pay a little more attention to what matters.

And smear your lipstick all over the faces of those you love.

Something New.

Belt- c/o Le Mode Accessories

Last night we had our first official board meeting

for the Shine Scholarship Project.

Having help is such a blessing.

I used to think that I needed to do everything by myself,

and had a hard time trusting that people would

follow through, and catch my vision.

In our 2 hour meeting, more was accomplished than

I could have done alone in a month.

This past year my faith in people has grown so much.

From you sweet souls who email me offering help and your talents,

to others who follow through on making things happen.

My new outlook on teamwork and support systems

is going to make The Shine Project what I want it to be.

I walked out literally jumping with excitement.

And it is all because this year I took a chance on a new idea.

Here's to new outlooks.

New goals.

New ideas.

And a new level of trust.

What it's like to live with me: Round 2

Remember Mike's post on what it's like to live with me HERE?

Well he's ready for round two. This guy is funny.
And PS: He recently made a food blog HERE... he cooks for me all the time.
Dream come true.

Ashley's got some funny little things she likes to do that make her special.

One day, I decided to start writing some of these things down,

just so I could read them every now and then to put me in a good mood.

Ashley loves trying on clothes at night. She's always wondering what an outfit would look like with this top, and those pants, and that scarf.... or maybe these boots....... She's gorgeous and has great taste in clothes! The only thing a little bit wrong about this is that she likes to do this when I am half asleep, patiently (trying to be patient anyway) waiting for her to turn off the lights. So, here's a little piece of advice: If you are a girl and like to try on different outfits, make sure you are not keeping anybody else up at night... Husbands need their man-beauty sleep.
I always try to keep some Cool Ranch Doritos or wheat thins in the house. Those are Ashley's favorites. Because when Ashley gets hungry or sleepy (hopefully not both at the same time) she likes to eat or sleep right then!.... And there is nooooo stopping this woman! When Ashley has her mind made up, that's it. Just like with The Shine Project - when she puts her mind to something, it gets done. There have been times when Ashley will be legitimately having a conversation with me and within 1 minute will be falling asleep and asking me to help her to our room. hahaha! It makes me laugh thinking about it.
Ashley's smile makes me happy. It doesn't matter if I'm frustrated with something. If she smiles at me, it's over.... Which sometimes is a bad thing because when she smiles at me, she always gets what she wants.
She is compassionate, smart, a motivator, and one of the hardest workers I've ever met in my life. I really love reading Ashley's posts because they make me feel like I can accomplish anything. She has helped me become the person I am today with her words of encouragement.
She is sassy! Yep, I said it. Ashley is a sassy girl! But from what I hear from her mom and dad, this is a characteristic she's had since the womb. This can be a good thing though because she doesn't put up with other people's bad attitudes.
She loves treats! From Skinny cow ice cream sandwiches to Christmas pie.
One of the things I love most about Ashley is that she is a very real person. She finds happiness in things, and she worries sometimes too. But, the difference between Ashley and most people is that she has the ability to brush off the bad stuff that happens and just move on.

I've been reading a lot of different stories about men and women

who had great ideas, and made them happen.

In every single instance, the people around them said that their vision

was impossible to accomplish.

Abraham Lincoln, Joan of Arc, Martin Luther King, Thomas Eddison,

the man who created Walmart, Steve Jobs,

Blake Mycoskie, the list goes on.

All of these people did completely unrelated things,

but one thing is similar.

They accomplished "the impossible."

As I've been on my own journey to bring light to new ideas,

and new social change,

I've been surrounded by people who encourage,

and those who don't.

Some who encourage me do it with a blankness in their eyes.

A wonder, and a doubt that says

there's no way she's going to make that happen.

As I've created my own goals and standards of living,

it has made me think.

"Who has set the standards so low?"

People who don't know how to accomplish hard things

think that no one can accomplish them.

Critics come from every angle.

It doesn't matter if you give shoes to1 million people,

or find the cure to cancer,

or send some students to college...

You're always going to have critics.

People who think they could have done it better,

or wonder your motives,

or judge your character.

What's going to set you apart from everyone else who has those same critics

is what you do with the words they tell you.

Will you listen and quit?

Or will you rise above them.

Create your own expectations.

Set your own measures of success.

And don't settle for low standards.

The people who tell you "you can't"

only say it because they know they can't do it themselves.

Make the impossible happen.

For nothing is impossible,

only undiscovered.

Do Something for the First Time

Those of you who have seen my tweets and FB status this weekend

know that I went camping for the first time.

You also know, that I petitioned for someone to come save me early Saturday

morning as I lied awake freezing in my tent.

For the past year and a half, I have been a leader for the

Young Women in my church.

I'm currently over ages 16-18, and this weekend

was Youth Conference.

The theme to this year's youth program just happens to be,

"Arise and Shine Forth."

You better believe I'm thrilled with this one.

We woke up before sunrise on Saturday morning

(well, I actually was up the whole night, but that's a different story.

Turns out, I'm not a camper.)

to go have a sunrise service on top of a hill.

Our speaker inspired me to be better,

"There are three kinds of people in this world.

Those who make it happen.

Those who watch it happen.

And those who wonder what happened."

We watched the light rise up above the mountains,

waking up the darkness that laid beyond them.

And it made me want to do more.

After a day of team building and doing some really cool things,

I checked camping off of my list,

and felt a little more inspired to just be better.

I started thinking about the last time I tried something for the first time.

I'm not talking about a movie you've never seen,

or a new restaurant, etc,

but something like camping.

It was so fun to go in with no expectations,

and leave having done something that I'd never done before.

It's easy to get stuck doing what we're comfortable doing every day.

But this week, that will change for those of you up for the challenge!

This week, do something for the first time.

Something that you've never done, and experience the fresh outlook on it all.

It can be something big, or extremely small.

But just do something new.

I can't wait to read about it.

Courage

I'll never forget the time in 7th grade when I was on the bus with my friends.

There was a girl a year younger behind us,

and I knew her parents had just gone through a divorce and things were tough.

My friends started laughing about her pants;

they were too short for her.

The girls making fun of her weren't quiet about what they thought.

I looked back at her seat just in time to see her hang her head,

and uncomfortably try and pull her pants down so they wouldn't

look like they were too high off the ground.

I felt so bad for her,

I was so mad at my friends.

But I didn't say anything.

I didn't join in on what they were saying,

and worse,

I didn't stick up for her either.

12 years later I am still ashamed of myself for not

having the courage to tell my friends to be quiet,

and go put my arm around a girl who just needed someone by her side.

After that day, I promised myself that I would never again remain silent

about something that I believed in.

I promised myself that no matter how uncomfortable the situation was,

that I would make myself have the courage to speak up or do things

that everyone else was to coward to do.

I haven't let myself down since.

Has it been completely embarrassing sometimes?

You bet.

Did it terrify me in the years when I was incredibly shy?

Without a doubt.

But now it has become a part of who I am.

And I'm not ashamed of that.

The courage to stand up against the fighting forces of the world and say,

"Hey, that's not right, and I won't take it"

is a sweet virtue that is fading away.

It takes courage to live every, single day.

Sometimes, courage comes in the moments when we just want

to give up because life is so hard, but we keep going anyways.

And not only do we keep going, but we do it with the outlook

that we will overcome.

Have courage. Stand a little taller. And see what happens when you choose to be braver.

Every night I lay awake in bed for hours.

I've had trouble sleeping for years,

but I'll leave that for a different post.

These past couple week as I've laid sleepless,

I've been praying for help.

I've been asking God to send me people that

will allow The Shine Project to grow,

and that I can trust to help me in this work that I live for.

As new projects are in the works,

and as I pour all my energy into them,

I know that my efforts can only go so far.

I needed people who could fill in what I lack.

Emails started coming.

Ones that started with,

"I know this sounds crazy, but I feel like I'm supposed to help you with...."

Almost all of positions that I needed help filling,

have been filled.

Because God answers prayers.

And we're able to be the answer to others prayers as we listen.

Little did they know that I had been laying in bed at night,

praying for their help.

How many times do we feel like we should reach out and help someone,

but are afraid that we will sound silly, or stupid, or weird?

We never know another's needs,

or how we can meet them,

if we never have the courage to just ask.

Next time you have that nudging feeling,

just do it.

Don't talk yourself out of it.

Remember, it just takes 20 seconds.

And you could change a person's life.

Stolen Cars.

You know what's funny?

Not 10 seconds after my post about courage the other day,

my husband called to tell me that our car was stolen.

Ironically our other car, which is new, is currently in the shop

after I was in a hit and run accident.

But that's a whole different story.

I'm not going to lie.

We hate the car that was stolen.

It's been around the block a few times,

and we've known that any day we're going to have to buy a new one.

In fact, almost everyday I joke and say,

"Oh my gosh I hope someone steals the Acura today."

So when Mike told me that it, in fact, was stolen,

I started laughing.

So hard.

And was actually happy that we had a "way out"

of owning that car.

Our insurance told us they'd give us money for a new car

after 30 days, and in the meantime pay for our rental.

I figured it was one of God's blessings,

and I wouldn't have to stress anymore about needing another new car

while we're saving up for a new house

and putting money into building The Shine Project and the non-profit.

Almost exactly 24 hours later a deputy from a really ghetto town in AZ

called to tell me our car had been found.

He acted like I should be happy about it,

but I was fuming.

How dare those criminals make me have the inconvenience of a stolen car,

and then not even run it off a cliff or escape across the border in it,

or something!

Now we have to pay money for our deductible to fix the damages

and drive two hours round trip tomorrow to pick it up.

Our car isn't even worth putting more money into.

I started to stress.

Really, really stress.

A minute passed, and I stopped myself.

What am I doing?

Stop worrying about the money, it will be okay.

This is only one minor setback,

and God is helping your business grow.

It will be fine.

And that was it.

I chose to have courage, and faith, and trust,

and things became a lot.less.stressful.

Courage wins.

Every single time.

Twenty Seconds.

This weekend I saw one of the best movies I've honestly ever seen in my whole life.

We Bought a Zoo.

It inspired me, and I left with the desire to become a little braver.

A quote that was said in the movie keeps replaying in my head,

"You know, sometimes all you need is twenty seconds of insane courage.

Just literally twenty seconds of embarrassing bravery.

And I promise you, something great will come of it."

Bravery isn't just found in heroic men,

strong public figures,

or the person you once heard about who lifted a bus off of 20 people.

Bravery can be found in each of you.

You just have to scrub off the layers that are keeping it

locked inside.

Whether it be standing up for what you believe in,

finally taking that leap of faith you've been pushing back,

not giving up,

being positive in spite of hopelessness,

or believing in yourself...

Great things in life take courage.

Instead of finding the fight within us,

sometimes we hang our heads, stick our tail between our legs,

and wallow away.

20 seconds of courage isn't long,

but it can change your life.

This week, your challenge is to find courage within yourself

to accomplish something that needs to be done,

but is terrifying to do.

Instead of backing away from the problem,

confront it.

And hear my whispering words,

"You can do it."

Change something through your bravery.

Start The Change...

In August I introduced Change4Change jars.

If you don't know what they are, please read about them Here.

I gave the deadline of December,

but have since decided that this is something I'm going to have available

all year long.

I want to share with you the email that I just sent out to those who

have pledged to do a jar:

I want to thank you all who have sent in your CHANGE4CHANGE money. We will be awarding the scholarships in the next month. I have sat in tears reading the essays and applications that have been sent in from students who just want a chance, and my heart is full that you're willing to help them. I wish that I could every single applicant a scholarship, and someday that's my goal, but for now I thank you from the bottom of my heart for sacrificing your change, to make a change.

... We're almost at 10,000, so we'll be able to award 4 scholarships. I want to get there so badly, and even if you have just $5 of change saved, it will help...

I Believe We Can.

I'm often asked what inspired me to create The Shine Project.

My answer is simple.

People inspired me to create it.

People I know, those I don't, strangers that I've only passed.

You can learn a lot about a person by watching them for a moment.

The way they interact with their environment,

their smile, or lack their of,

and the way that they carry themselves.

As I've engaged with people throughout my life,

I realized something.

A lot of people are unhappy.

Some don't even know it.

But they are digging for something deeper,

trying to find more purpose, and more meaning.

A lot of times, I meet people who are complacent

with where they are in life.

This is the worst place to be.

They aren't doing what they necessarily dream of doing,

but it's enough to get them by, so they settle.

In the back of their minds, though, they feel disappointed.

In themselves, in their choices, and in their lack of action towards their dreams.

Complacency kills us.

It halts our growth.

It makes us believe our own excuses, and wraps itself tight around our

ability to to do great things, so that we can't.

You know what?

I believe we can.

I believe that we can do whatever we want.

I believe it's hard, and that it hurts sometimes,

but I know that it also brings tremendous joy.

And then we get to share that joy with others.

That's why I created The Shine Project.

Now you know :)

This year, The Shine Project will be coming to your cities

to spread a little light on your communities with you.

I thought we'd start the year with a bang,

so Casey Wiegand and I have teamed up for the first shine event of the year!

Be Your Best Self

I love the obsession that people have with change at the beginning of every year.

I just wish that it would last.

Could you imagine what it would be like if everyday,

everyone was committed to creating a better self?

But we get overwhelmed with what we "should" be doing,

and it's easy to just let everything slip all-together.

For example, you're setting your New Year's resolutions,

and you set a goal of losing 50 pounds, going to the gym 6 days a week,

and eating no carbs.

The problem is that you currently go to the gym 0 days a week, love carbs,

and feel so completely overwhelmed with your goal

that after 1 week you've lost hope and feel like you're a failure.

Change is not an event. It's a process.

A process of doing little things, a step at a time, until they become who you are.

I love goals. I love reaching them even more. And I love helping others do the same.

There's going to be big changes at The Shine Project this year,

that will be happening little by little,

and you're going to see me squirm a little as I completely

step out of my comfort zone.

So what do you say? Let's go through change this year together.

To start, I'm bringing back weekly challenges.

I realized that they were the focus behind my blog,

and I want us all to encourage each other.

Every Monday, I will post a new challenge.

Something that's going to help you become a better YOU.

It will help you realize that you have a fight within you

that you didn't even know was there.

Then, on Fridays, you'll post on your blog how the challenge went,

thoughts on it, etc...and link it back to my blog.

We're all here to motivate each other along our growing pains of change.

So! Your challenge to kick off the new year is simple.

Then make a list of ways that YOU can help make that change.

This week is so fun with my sister home.

The other night we convinced the boys to take us to a place called Jump Street.

It's literally a building full of trampolines that are connected.

So fun. Until I got domed in the face during dodge ball.

Somehow, we also convinced the boys to let us have a sleepover.

So we made a fort in our living room.

And Mike made banana pancakes for breakfast.

Best day of my life.

My mom fixed my pink beach cruiser for my birthday,

so Mike and I have been running around town on our new bikes.

He got his off of Craigslist.

Craig, whoever you are, you're a genius.

On Monday I bought Start Something That Matters,

a book written by the guy who started TOMS.

I read it that same night,

and am so completely inspired.

Speaking of inspired, isn't my T-shirt rad?!

My Journey in 2011

January 16th

I created my first shine necklace to give to a widow,

and The Shine Project began. (here)

On January 26th I put my necklaces up for sale, and sent out my first shipment!

February

I started doing weekly Shine challenges to inspire people to make a change,

and reached a life goal of completing a half marathon.

You all gave me so much encouragement! (here)

March

I realized that maybe my idea was spreading a little faster than I anticipated.

I also injured my knee badly from running (I still cant run)

and had to stop working at Cesar Chavez High school because I couldn't

walk for over a month.

During this time, God showed me that it was time to make the leap

to be self-employed.

April

Was interviewed by NBC local news for a segment about TSP. (Here)

They ended up loosing it, and we had to re shoot one that aired in July.

It ended up being the biggest blessing ever because it helped spread word about a new project.

May

Had the first Shine Project Service Event in Arizona.(Here)

We also graduated from ASU. (here)

In May, I realized that if we all came together for a common goal,

a lot could get accomplished.

I raised the price of my necklaces by $1, donating it to the Shine Scholarship Fund.

July

Organized a beach clean up in San Diego for the second Shine Project service event.

Rescued our little Oliver from the pound, who now is my obsession!

August

Started the CHANGE4CHANGE campaign (here)

and dove head first into planning a charity event for The Shine Scholarship Project,

which raises money for college scholarships for inner city high school students.

September

Started selling vintage clothes for fun.

And boy has it been fun!

But more importantly, had life changing moments like this

that fueled my mission.
CBS local news also caught wind of my project and did a live interview
on their Morning Show with me.

October

Successfully threw the first charity Shine Event

that I had many sleepless nights over.

This was one of the highlights of my year. (here)

November

Felt inspired to create The Shine Scholarship Project.

A non-profit organization that raises money for inner city high school students,

while getting them involved in service in their community. (here)

This is still in the process.

December

With your help, I was able to win Christmas for one of my student's families.

It was such a sweet experience.

I chose my Board of Directors for the non-profit,

and have so many changes in the works that 2012 doesn't even know what is coming!

We've raised over $10,000 in just a few months for the scholarship fund,

and I promise you, with your continued help,

more lives are going to be impacted these next 12 months and beyond.

Christmas Surprise

The video above is the best way to sum up our Christmas.

It was full of love, and the spirit of Christ, and giving.

And I can't think of a better way to have spent it.

When we were delivering Christmas,

the magic of the holiday was heard in the voice of the little girl.

She exclaimed, "See mom! I told you Santa would come! He didn't

forget about us!"

And that's what Christmas is.

It can't be found in one present,

or delicious food,

or holiday sales and pretty sweaters.

The only way Christmas can be felt is through love,

and giving that love to others.

After all, that's what we celebrate on December 25th of every year.

The birth of our Savior was done through love.

"For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten son."

Let's have the spirit of Christmas in our hearts everyday.

It sure would make the world a whole lot of a better place.

The Best Christmas I Ever Had...

One of the best Christmas's I've ever had was two years ago.

Mike proposed to me Christmas morning, my family was there,

my dad was in denial, and it was a complete surprise.

Now there's a little special memory that brings a little giddiness to the holidays.

Earlier this week I asked you to share your favorite Christmas with me

on my Facebook page.

All of the answers were so perfect. Here's what a few of you said:

The best Christmas I ever had was 2 years ago - the first Christmas with my son. He was born 3 weeks early (he was due after Christmas). We had waited for him for a long time. That Christmas was perfect! -Clarion Wren

After I spent four months in military training, I got to come home for Christmas break. My Husband had moved all of our stuff from Florida to Tennessee, and I had never seen our home in Tennessee. So, I got to come home to my Husband after being apart, a home I had never seen & I had my first ever white Christmas when it snowed on Christmas eve & Christmas day. -Brittney Luycx

I think I was about 4 and my Mom and Dad were together and happy. They are both gone now...so that is a special memory. -Janine Shaffer

The best Christmas I ever had was when I was around nine years old and after two days of traveling all over Minnesota to see every relative and have so much fun, the transmission on our van died five miles before home and Dad had to walk through snow-covered, frozen pastures to a farmhouse at 10pm on Christmas night to call a tow truck to take us home. The moment itself was pretty yucky for my parents, but it was beyond exciting for my brother and I. But the best part is that the transmission was replaced for free, so that was a big Merry Christmas present for my parents! -Karly Gomez

Twas the night before Christmas, while scheduling posts on the blog
Not a child was stirring, they were bumps on a log.
Facebook was quiet no updates to see,
I sure hope Santa remembers presents for me!

Santa or Rudolph- Santa. Ho ho ho. I love that he eats so many cookies.

Stocking or presents- Presents, but I love stockings. My mom always does the best ones,

and we open them while waiting for my dad to wake up.

Egg nog or hot cider- I LOVE apple cider. yum yum yum.

Angel or star- Angel

Decorating the tree or putting lights outside- The tree!

Warm cozy fires or sleigh rides- Do I get to drive the sleigh? If I do, then I chose that.

Family time or friend time- Both. I love the holidays because my sister and friends are all home. I get depressed just thinking about when they're all gonna have to leave.

Expensive presents or from the heart- Can't a nice car come from the heart? :)

Snowball fight or snowmen- I wish it would snow on Christmas. We make snowmen out of cactus and rocks.

Coal or presents- Is this a trick question?

Caroling or Christmas stories- I can't sing....so definitely stories.

Snowy days or ice days- 70 degree days. Thanks. #iloveArizona

Red or green- Red.
